International Beer Day

When does International Beer Day take place?

Beer is one of the most popular beverages worldwide, therefore International Beer Day has been established. This celebration takes place annually on the first Friday in August and it began in 2007 in a small bar in Santa Cruz, California in the U.S. The celebration attracted so much attention that it is now celebrated all over the world, including in 207 cities, 50 countries and on 6 continents.

What is the origin of beer?

The origin of beer can be traced back nine thousand years to the Middle East, today Iraq, where it was brewed by the Sumerian civilization. It was considered a gift from the gods and was used in their religious and social practices. Beer was initially made by fermenting cereal grains, such as barley, wheat, or millet. Then the brewing process was refined over time. For example, in ancient Egypt, beer was flavored with various herbs and spices. It was considered a staple food; for this reason, it was consumed by both adults and children.

Why do we celebrate International Beer Day?

International Beer Day is celebrated to enjoy mankind’s common thirst for this beverage as well as to appreciate the culture and history of beer around the world. It is an opportunity to:

  • Gather with friends and enjoy the taste of beer.
  • Celebrate those responsible for brewing and serving beer.
  • Unite the world by celebrating the beers of all nations and cultures.
  • Support local breweries and raise awareness about the responsible consumption of alcohol.
