Tour de France in Cancún in 2020

More than 1,500 athletes will participate in the Tour de France experience in Cancún in June 2020, as announced at a recent press conference attended by cyclist, Alberto Contador, the only champion of the Tour de France’s three tournaments; Spain, Italy and France.

The event will be called L’Etape Cancún and will offer three distances; 35, 75 and 155 kilometers, in order to make it accessible to many cyclists. According to Alberto Contador, the altitude, sea level, will not be an obstacle for cyclists coming from Europe, and he predicts a successful sporting event.

The route will begin in Cancún’s famous Hotel Zone, then travel along the Ruta de los Cenotes in Puerto Morelos, and will finish at Tec Milenio University Campus in Cancún.

For Mara Lezama, municipal president of Benito Juárez, an event like Tour de France L’Etape Cancún will position the city in the sports tourism category in a significant way. He recalled that sports are the 4th most common reason that people visit Cancún, after beach tourism, weddings and conventions.

It is estimated that this contest will generate more than 18 million pesos by occupying two thousand hotel rooms per night. Other stages are held in México in La Paz, CDMX, Acapulco and the State of México.
