Sunset World Group Continues Sea Turtle Protection Program and Publishes 2021 Results

Cancun, Mexico – Just like the millions of people who visit each year, sea turtles love Mexico. Of the seven sea turtle species in the world, six nest on Mexican beaches and four nest in Quintana Roo: the green turtle (Chelonia mydas), the loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta), the leatherback turtle (Dermochelys Coriacea) and the hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata). Despite tourism development, large number of sea turtles continue to lay their eggs on the beaches of Cancun every year.

Sea turtle nesting season in the Mexican Caribbean takes place from May to November. One of the beaches that welcomes the most turtles is at Sunset Royal Beach Resort, part of Sunset World Group. The security staff trains annually to observe females when they arrive, spawn and depart, to collect the eggs, place them safely in pens and care for the baby turtles when they hatch and are released into the sea.

Training is provided by the Cancun Municipal Secretariat of Ecology and Urban Development and includes the following:

Beach preparation
Female management specifications
Pen site selection and construction
Nest recollection and relocation
Egg preservation techniques
Controlled release of baby turtles
Monitoring, counting and statistical reporting

The program in Sunset Royal yielded the following results in 2021… The first female arrived on June 2, a green turtle that laid 180 eggs, 158 of which hatched. The last arrival was on October 11. In total, 42 nests with a total of 5,982 eggs were protected in pens and 5,687 green turtles were released. No other species arrived in 2021.

“This program is a priority for Sunset World Group because sea turtles are classified under national legislation as an endangered species,” said Enrique Caldas, Sunset World Group Corporate Security Manager. “Unfortunately, the main threat to sea turtles is humans… polluting the oceans with plastics that they confuse with their main food, jellyfish,” he explained.

Located on one of the most beautiful white sand beaches in the Mexican Caribbean with dazzling views of Cancun’s Hotel Zone, Sunset Royal offers fine entertainment for the whole family with daily and nightly activities. Sunset Royal’s central location offers access to Cancun’s best entertainment, nightclubs, restaurants and shopping centers. The all-inclusive plan allows guests to enjoy exquisite international cuisine, premium drinks and activities at both Sunset Royal and Sunset Marina, with ground transportation between Sunset World resorts in Cancun and water transportation to and from Sunset Marina.
