Beware of the Dog Days!

The dog days is the season of the year during which the heat is at its strongest in the Northern Hemisphere and it lasts between four and seven weeks, depending on the location. In Mexico, this period begins the first week of July and ends the second week of August.

The name “dog days” comes from the constellation Canis Major (Big Dog) and its star Sirius, whose dawn or first rise over the horizon coincides with the phenomenon of scorching heat in the Northern Hemisphere.

With the onset of the dog days, temperatures can reach up to 42°C, so it is essential to protect our health. The Quintana Roo Health Secretariat recommends:

  • Avoid sun exposure between 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.
  • Wear light-colored, lightweight, long-sleeved clothing
  • Stay in cool, well-ventilated areas
  • Stay hydrated constantly
  • Do not leave people or pets in unventilated vehicles
  • If you or a family member show symptoms of dehydration or heat exhaustion, go immediately to the nearest hospital or clinic.
