Since 2017, the Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT) of Mexico has had an active campaign to raise awareness about solid waste management, which is called Urban Solid Waste, encouraging people to separate waste because most of what we throw away is reusable and/or recyclable. If we do not separate waste, we turn it into garbage, which makes it difficult to use.
To make this task easier for the average citizen, SEMARNAT presented the official iconography that will be placed on containers and that allows for immediate, clear and precise identification of urban solid waste and thus separate it into the most common fractions into which it can be divided and that can be applied at a national level.
In Cancun, SIRESOL, a decentralized agency of the Benito Juárez municipality, is in charge of promoting the Urban Solid Waste campaign and is currently, together with the Cancun Hotel Association, promotes the use of official icons that will be placed on waste containers in all hotels.
