Fraud is Rife, and One of the Most Affected Industries is Vacation Clubs

If you have been a victim of timeshare fraud, you should report the fraud to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) at https://www.ic3.gov and consider filing a criminal complaint with the attorney general’s office in the state where the resort is located.

The following steps should be taken:

Report the fraud: Contact FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) and file a formal complaint with the FBI’s IC3 at https://www.ic3.gov.

State Attorney General: File a criminal complaint with the attorney general’s office in the state where the resort is located.

Seek legal advice: Consult an attorney. If you believe you have a solid case, seek the advice of an attorney specializing in consumer protection or fraud.

Power of Attorney: If you plan to file a complaint in Mexico, consider hiring an lawyer with a valid power of attorney.

Protect Yourself from Future Scams:

Beware of unsolicited calls, texts, or emails. Scammers often use aggressive tactics and time-sensitive offers. Always research the entities you contact and verify the legitimacy of the companies or individuals before sharing any information or making payments.

Avoid “free” offers: Be wary of promises of free meals or gifts, as these are often part of a scam.

Consider Alternatives to Timeshare Sales Companies: Instead of using a timeshare sales company, consider contacting the resort developer directly or selling your timeshare on your own.

If you are a Sunset Word member at Club Sunset or Club Hacienda Tres Rios and have any concerns or have been a victim of fraud, please contact one of our advisors directly at the Member Services Office.
