Cancun is the most popular vacation destination in Mexico. Millions of travelers visit Cancun, Playa del Carmen and the Riviera Maya every year. One of visitors most frequently asked questions is, “What is the best way to get to the resort?” The first thing to do is check if roundtrip airport transportation is included in your vacation package or stay. If it’s not, there are many different kinds of transportation available, both one-way and roundtrip.

1. HOTEL TRANSPORTATION

Even if your resort doesn’t provide free roundtrip airport transportation, they may offer private or shared transportation for purchase. Ask about this and then compare the price to other options.

2. ADO BUS

There are air-conditioned ADO busses that run all day from the airport (terminal 2) to downtown Cancun or downtown Playa del Carmen. This option is by far the most economical, but only if you are staying within a few miles of the downtown area of either city and can walk or take a cab to the hotel.

*If you fly into terminal 3 or 4, there are free shuttles to terminal 2 where you can catch the ADO bus.

3. SHARED AIRPORT TRANSPORTATION

Tickets for these vans can be purchased as you leave the airport. This is the second most economical way to go. The van will stop at various resorts to drop other passengers off. For a few dollars more, an upgraded version of this service is often available.

4. PRIVATE AIRPORT TRANSPORTATION

A private taxi from the airport is significantly more expensive than the other options, but it means no stops at other resorts along the way. You will not share the van or car with anyone else. There are also VIP options available.

5. TRANSPORTATION COMPANIES

There are many websites where you can book transportation online ahead of time. Just make sure you do your research about how dependable they are and ask if the transportation is shared or private.

6. RENT A CAR

If you are not going all inclusive, or if you plan to take a lot of day trips, it may be to your advantage to rent a car. There are various car rental companies onsite at the airport and many offsite as well. Most companies allow you to book online ahead of time.
Note: Car seats are not required in Mexico, but if you have small children and it’s important to you that they ride in a car seat, bring car seats with you. Very few transportation companies have them available and there is no way to know the type or condition of the seats of the ones that do
